The available literature provides information on the use of insects as processed insect protein (PAP) in food pets. A high protein content, including exogenous amino acids and fat, is a characteristic of all developmental stages of insects. The nutrients found in processed insect protein are influenced by their stage of development, production conditions, and the feed and material used to grow them. The use of insect PAP in the pet food industry is also supported by the evolutionary adaptation of their wild ancestors to collect insects in the natural environment. In diets for pets containing feed material obtained from insects, full-fat or defatted PAP from black fly and mealworm larvae and house cricket imago were most often used. Beside that pasteurised or blanched larvae homogenates can be used as meat substitutes in dry and wet pet food.
